Tyre Tread Depth: What is it and Why it Matters

Tyres on every vehicle serve as a barrier between the vehicle operator and the road. Due to the crucial nature of tyres, it is key to keep up with the maintenance of one of the most important parts of the vehicle. That includes keeping a watchful eye on tyre tread depth.

What is Tyre Tread Depth?

Tyre tread depth is a measurement used to determine the normal wear of the vehicle’s tyres. Specifically, it is a vertical measurement from the top of the tyre to the bottom of the tyre’s deepest point.

It is very normal to see wear on tyres, especially if they are used regularly. Over time, tyres will naturally lose traction and tread, and in turn, lose their grip-strength on the road. It’s important to notice this change before any serious safety issues arise.

How ATEQ Helps Professionals Measure Tyre Tread:

At ATEQ TPMS, it is a goal to make the lives of professionals in the automotive aftermarket industry easier. The Tyre Tread Depth Gauge is at the forefront of this initiative. This handheld device can be used with the ATEQ VT56, the most powerful TPMS tool on the market. When used together, automotive professionals have a complete tyre management solution.

What do the numbers mean?

Knowing the tread on the vehicle’s tyres keeps the driver safe on the road, but it is not always easy to know exactly what the numbers mean. To make the process more efficient, ATEQ has color-coded the numbers for tread depth for quick understanding, built-in the tool.

Overall, here are what the numbers typically mean:

6/32” or higher: Screen will display green, the tread is in good condition.

5/32”: Screen will display green, although tyres are losing some traction.

4/32”: Screen will display yellow, consider replacing tyres soon.

3/32”: Screen will display red, they are close to being legally bald.

2/32”: Screen will display red, tyres are now legally bald and must be replaced.

Tyre tread is a very important aspect of vehicle maintenance. Regularly inspecting tyres lowers the risk of driving on bald, dangerous tyres and causing major safety concerns.
